If you check the balance with the Unified Payment Interface i.e. UPI app, then you may have trouble doing so from August 1. From August 1, you will not be able to check the balance through the UPI app more than 50 times a day. These changes are for users, banks and merchants, all.

Here, through question and answer, we understand what is changing and what will be the effect on you…

Question 1: Which new rules are applying in UPI?

answer: There are many changes in UPI from 1 August. The biggest changes are:

  • Balance check limit: Now you will be able to check your bank balance more than 50 times in a day than one UPI app.
  • Autope transactions time: Autope (eg EMI, subscription, or bill payment) will now be in the fixed time slots, not at any time of the day.
  • Transaction status check limit: If a payment is stuck, then you can check its status only 3 times, that too with a 90 second gap every time.

Question 2: Why are these changes being made?

answer: NPCI says that the UPI system is getting a lot of load, especially in peak hours (10 am to 1 pm and 5 to 9:30 pm). Repeated checking or checking transaction status slows down the system.

Recently, in April and March 2025, there were two major outages (incidents of system down) in UPI, causing problems to millions of users. These changes are an attempt to make the system fast, reliable and unstable.

Question 3: What are the time slots fixed for autope?

answer: Autope transactions (eg Netflix subscription, mobile recharge, or EMI) will now be processed in non-peak hours. These are the time:

  • Before 10 am
  • Between 1 pm to 5 pm
  • After 9:30 pm

This will reduce the load on the system and will complete the transactions rapidly.

Question 4: Will these changes apply to all UPI users?

answer: Yes, these rules will apply to all UPI users, whether you use PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or any other UPI app. But if you do not check the balance repeatedly or do not refresh the transaction status, then you will not make much difference.

Question 5: What will be the effect on common users?

answer: Nothing will change for common users. Your daily payment, bill payment, or money transfer will work in the same way. Just if you check the balance check more than 50 times a day, then you will have to stop when the limit crosses. If autope payments will be on time automatically, then you do not need to do anything.

Question 6: Is there any change in the limit of UPI transaction amount?

answer: No, the limit of transaction amount will remain the same. There is a limit of up to Rs 1 lakh per transaction for most transactions and up to Rs 5 lakh for healthcare or education related payments. These changes have nothing to do with it.

Question 7: Users will have to do something? Answer: No, do nothing to you. These changes will automatically come into force in your UPI apps. Just keep in mind that take care of the limit of checking the balance or watching linked accounts, so that you do not have any problem.
