The Supreme Court today canceled the bail of former director and promoter Dheeraj Wadhawan of Diwan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL) on 5 August 2025. This decision has been taken in a big bank loan scam case, in which Dheeraj Wadhawan is accused of scam of Rs 42,871.42 crore. The court has ordered him to surrender within two weeks.
Dheeraj Wadwan was granted bail by the Delhi High Court on 9 September 2024 due to ill. The High Court had said that Dheeraj falls under the category of a “sick person”. The CBI appealed to the Supreme Court against this decision.
Additional Solicitor General S. from CBI. V. Raju argued that Dheeraj has no serious illness and got bail by receiving medical reports from private hospitals. A bench of Supreme Court judges Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma canceled the bail after studying the medical board report.
The scam caused a loss of Rs 34,615 crore to banks, which was outstanding till 31 July 2020.
17 banks cheated The matter is based on the complaint of Union Bank of India. The complaint stated that the then DHFL Chairman and Managing Director Kapil Wadhawan, Director Dheeraj Wadhawan and other accused together hatched a criminal conspiracy to cheat a group of 17 banks.
Under this conspiracy, he sanctioned large loans worth Rs 42,871.42 crore from banks. The CBI claims that the large part of this amount was wrongly withdrawn and misused this money. The scam was carried out by manipulating DHFL books. The scam caused a loss of Rs 34,615 crore to banks, which was outstanding till 31 July 2020.
How DHFL scam happened DHFL was a housing finance company, against which it was alleged to have created 2.60 lakh fake home loan accounts, which were associated with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). According to the CBI, the company took large -scale loans from banks and misused it. Dheeraj and Kapil Wadhawan are the main accused in this case.

- Arrest in July 2022: Dheeraj and his brother Kapil Wadhawan were arrested in the case in July 2022.
- Chargesheet in October 2022: The CBI filed a charge sheet in October 2022, after which the court started its investigation.
- Medical bail in September 2024: Delhi High Court granted Dheeraj bail for health reasons. Which has now been canceled by the Supreme Court.
- 5 August 2025: The bail of Dheeraj Wadwan was quashed by the Supreme Court.
