After Trump’s tariff announcement in April, India has doubled the purchase of crude oil from the US. In the April-June quarter, the purchase of crude oil from the US has increased by 114% on an annual basis.

In 2024, between April and June, India bought oil worth about 15 thousand crores from the US. In the same period of 2025, this figure doubled to 32 thousand crore rupees.

Increased oil bought after Trump became President in January

  • India bought 2.71 lakh barrels of crude oil every day between January to June 2025 from the US. In 2024, between January and June, the figure was 1.8 lakh barrels per day. That is, it has increased by 51%.
  • Only 23% more crude oil came from the US than in June 2025 in July 2025. The US stake in India’s total oil imports also increased from 3% to 8%.

Penalty imposed on oil purchase from India’s Russia

On July 30, Trump announced a 25% tariff on India, saying that India always buys most of its military things from Russia and is Russia’s biggest oil buyer. All this is happening when everyone wants Russia to stop killing people in Ukraine. This is not all right. Therefore, India will have to pay 25% tariff from August 1 and a penalty on trade from Russia.

India currently imports about 40% of its needs from Russia from Russia. According to reports, India currently buys 1.15 million barrels of crude oil every day from Russia every day.
