The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched in 2016.
The central government has sanctioned a compensation amount of 30 thousand crore rupees to make up for the loss caused by selling LPG cylinders in subsidy. This amount will be given to government oil companies in 12 installments.
Apart from this, Rs 12,000 crore has also been sanctioned for subsidy of Ujjwala scheme. Today, that is, it has been approved in the Union Cabinet meeting on 8 August.
International market LPG’s high prices damage companies
Government oil companies such as domestic LPG cylinders IOCL, BPCL and HPCL sell in India, and these cylinders are available at regulated prices fixed by the government.
That is, their prices are not decided from the market, but the government controls them so that common people can use LPG cheaply.
LPG prices have been high in the international market for a long time. This caused heavy losses to the oil companies. He had to buy LPG at expensive prices, but had to sell at cheap prices. This loss is called under-ricor, that is, the amount that companies could not get from sale.
12,000 crore sanctioned for subsidy of Ujjwala scheme
The government has sanctioned Rs 12,000 crore to continue subsidy of the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in 2025-26. The beneficiaries of this scheme get a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 on a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder. 9 cylinders can be taken in a year.
Prime Minister Ujjwala scheme was launched in 2016
PMUY was launched in May 2016, which was aimed at providing free LPG connections to women from poor families of the country. Under this scheme, adult women of poor homes are given LPG connection, so that they can cook food from gas instead of harmful fuels like wood or coal.
As of 1 July 2025, 10.33 crore connections have been given under PMUY across the country. The first refill and stove under Ujjwala 2.0 are also available for free. That is, the beneficiaries do not have to pay a single penny to take connections or the first cylinder and stove.
