IDBI Bank Chairman and Padmashree TN Manoharan died today in Mumbai due to heart attack. Manoharan had long been connected to the fields of chartered accountancy and corporate governance.

He was also the former chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). He is also known for books written on taxation.

Manoharan has also been the chairman of Canara Bank as well as Mahindra Group, Board Member of Tech Mahindra and Administrator of Lakshmi Vilas Bank.

Manoharan was born in 1956 in a freedom fighter family

TN Manoharan was born in April 1956 in Rajkoil village of Vellore district of Tamil Nadu into a freedom fighter’s family. He received a post-graduation in Commerce from Sri Venkateswara University and a law degree from Madras Law College.

After becoming a Chartered Accountant in 1983, he established Manohar Chaudhary and Associates in Chennai. In 2006-07, he promoted the accounting reforms and amendments in the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 as the Chairman of ICAI.

Important role played in Satyam Computer Revival

In 2009, the company was close to drowning with a scam of Rs 7,000 crore in Satyam Computer Services. The government included Manoharan in the company’s board, where he played an important role in reviving the company in 100 days.

The Satyam Computer Services under his leadership merged with Tech Mahindra. For this, he received the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in 2009 and the Padma Shri in 2010. He also wrote a book called The Tech Phoenix: Satyams 100-Day Turnaround on this experience.

Manoharan, who was also the chairman of Canara Bank

Manoharan strengthened the banking sector as Non-Educational Chairman (2015-2020) of Canara Bank and Administrative of Lakshmi Vilas Bank.

He was a board member of Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, and National Bank for Financing Infrastructure. He also contributed to the committees of RBI, SEBI, IRDA, and CBDT. In 2009-11, he was the chairman of CII’s accounting Standards and Taxation Committee.

Manoharan also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and the Business Leadership Award in 2009.
